A Heavenly Home Security System

Praying for God's protection over our homes

Walking into the empty front room of our new house, I was just beginning to daydream about decorating when a tingle of anticipation skipped up my spine. It’s a sign I often recognize before I hear from the Holy Spirit.

“Build your house on Me and I will protect it,” I sensed Him say. I smiled at His creative description as He whispered, “Let Me show you how to activate a heavenly home security system.”

That day, the Holy Spirit introduced me to the concept of a prayer walk, inviting me to pray for God’s protection over my home as we walked through each room. Tracing my fingertips along the walls, I prayed God’s strong arms would hold them up. As I walked the floors, I prayed for the strength to make Jesus the solid foundation upon which I would create this new home. I asked God to bless the activity under its roof and help my family members keep the door to their hearts open.

As I took this first prayer walk, I sensed God activating His heavenly home security system. The experience was so profound I’ve made it a regular practice.

I believe that covering our homes in prayer is an integral part of protecting them against the prevailing evil in our world today. Sure, we can invest in high-tech security cameras and install extra deadbolts on our doors, but those man-made measures only go so far. When we pray over our homes, we seal in the peace of God and block out the world’s chaos. Outside those four walls, “your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8b NIV).

Cultivating a prayer-walk practice is simple: walk through your home in prayer, asking God’s direction, blessings, and protection over every room and everyone who resides there. Consider including your children, spouse, or roommate on your prayer walks, inviting them to pray for each member of your household and their activities.

As we make it a priority to cover our homes in prayer and follow God’s precepts to keep Him at the centre of our daily routines and rhythms, we will experience a peaceful harbour of safety against the storms outside. Don’t wait! Activate God’s heavenly home security system today!
