Have you ever tried to dress up a pig? Picture it: a muddy, snorting creature with a delicate string of pearls dangling around its neck. It's absurd, isn't it? The pig doesn't care about the beauty of the pearls—it's too busy rooting in the muck.
In Matthew 7:6, Jesus paints a vivid picture when He warns us, "Do not throw your pearls to pigs." But what does that mean for us as Christian women today?
Pearls, in this context, represent the precious treasures God has entrusted to us—our faith, our time, our energy, and even the sacred truths of His Word. Pigs symbolize those who cannot—or will not—recognize the value of those gifts. Jesus isn't calling us to judge, but to discern. When we keep giving our best to those who trample it or mock it, we end up hurt, exhausted, and spiritually depleted.
As women, we often feel the pull to give endlessly—to fix, to please, to pour ourselves out until we're empty. And yes, Jesus tells us to give freely and love without keeping score. But He also instructed His disciples to shake the dust off their feet when the truth wasn't received. Not to dismiss the people or discount the message, but to guard their hearts from untruth and dishonor. It's the tension between generous grace and healthy boundaries—something Jesus modeled so perfectly.
There's a time to pour out, and a time to walk away—not in bitterness, but in wisdom. Not everyone deserves your pearls. That doesn't mean you stop loving—it means you stop wasting what's sacred on those who continually reject it.
So how do we live this out?
Ask God for wisdom to recognize the "pigs" in your life—not to condemn them, but to protect what's sacred. Guard your quiet time, your peace, and your calling. And when it's time to share your treasures, give them to hearts that will cherish them—sisters in faith, the hungry and humble, or even a stranger God nudges you toward.
You are not a pig wearing pearls, dear one.
You are a daughter of the King, adorned with His crown of beauty and grace.
Wear your pearls boldly—but cast them wisely.
Lord, give me discernment to know where to share Your gifts. Help me value what You've given me and trust You with the rest. Amen.
